Darkroom Photography
About the Course
Students will be provided with supplies for this elective.
The Darkroom Photography Experience
Put aside digital devices and immerse yourself in alternative and experimental film photography. You’ll explore the hands-on possibilities of analog image-making, from creating photographs without a camera to transforming your prints into handmade art objects.
During the first week, you’ll learn the fundamentals of the traditional silver darkroom, beginning with photograms made from plants and found objects. You’ll then use Holga medium-format film cameras to photograph your surroundings, learning to process your own film and make prints by hand.
For your final projects, you’ll explore how photographs can take on new forms through folding, binding, and collage. You’ll turn your darkroom prints into handmade books and three-dimensional works, discovering new ways to shape and share your images.
What You’ll Create
You’ll develop a collection of photograms, film photographs, and hand-printed darkroom images. You’ll transform selected prints into handmade books or three-dimensional art objects that showcase your experiments with photography, materials, and form.
