Portfolio Development for College Applications
About the Course
Ideally, students will bring in a collection of work that is ready for review, but works in process are welcome! Not needed the first day.
12
Students will learn to present their artwork and creative ideas with confidence as they prepare to apply to undergraduate visual arts programs. Designed for high school juniors and seniors, this four-session workshop will combine individualized portfolio feedback with practical support for written applications and artwork documentation.
Working with Cornish faculty, Admissions counselors, and the Cornish Writing Center, students will select and organize artwork, identify opportunities for improvement, and develop a Statement of Purpose tailored to a school of their choice. They’ll learn how to explain their creative process and show the interests, experimentation, and skills behind their work.
Students will also practice photographing and lighting two-dimensional and three-dimensional artwork for digital submission. Through discussion and peer critique, they’ll gain experience talking about their work, responding to feedback, and understanding what different colleges ask applicants to submit.
The workshop will bring together the portfolio and college preparation that students experience during Summer@Cornish’s Friday sessions, offering that focused support in a standalone course.
Students will be encouraged to bring existing artwork for review. Works in progress will also be welcome, and a completed portfolio will not be required to begin.
What Students Will Create
Students will develop a refined digital portfolio and a school-specific Statement of Purpose, supported by individualized feedback. They’ll leave with stronger artwork documentation, experience presenting their creative work, and clear next steps for their college applications.
