This studio course introduces students to the expressive potential of digital games and the vital role of game art in shaping meaning and aesthetic experience. Students will explore how visual design, basic storytelling, and interaction come together to create atmosphere, emotion, and identity within gameplay.

They will learn to think and talk about games as both designed media and works of art, developing the ability to create game visuals that enhance narrative, evoke feeling, and influence player perception. Through the analysis of existing games, the design of original game art concepts, and collaborative projects, students will gain practical experience in applying artistic principles to interactive media.

Over the course of the session, students will produce concept art and functional visual assets for a small collaborative game project and will also create a “game mod,” contributing original artwork to a self-selected commercial title. By the end, they will have a stronger understanding of how game artists shape player experience and communicate ideas through visual design.

While this elective can be taken on its own, is is designed to pair perfectly with the core Summer@Cornish morning Art & Design Intensive program.

We encourage students to enroll the morning intensive to build a strong foundation, then expand their skills and interests through these afternoon electives.
