Students will be provided with supplies for this elective.

Life drawing—working from live models—is a core skill for any developing visual artist. In this elective, students will strengthen their perceptual and conceptual abilities through a combination of drawing exercises, critiques, lectures, and sustained studio practice. While working directly with a live model throughout the course, students will learn to translate what they observe into expressive and accurate drawings using a variety of traditional techniques.

In addition to studio work, students will explore both contemporary and historical approaches to figure drawing, gaining insight into how artists across time have represented the human form. Instruction will focus on the construction of the figure and body, proportional systems of the head and face, and developing a volumetric understanding of the body’s planes through line, tone, and light.

Students will experiment with a range of black-and-white media while cultivating visual awareness, observational accuracy, and self-expression through the study of the human figure.

While this elective can be taken on its own, is is designed to pair perfectly with the core Summer@Cornish morning Art & Design Intensive program.

We encourage students to enroll the morning intensive to build a strong foundation, then expand their skills and interests through these afternoon electives.
