Summer@Cornish FAQs

What is Summer@Cornish? Summer@Cornish is a 4-week intensive program offering high school students a mini-college experience at Cornish College of the Arts. The curriculum prepares students for future arts careers. Rather than focusing on just one discipline or existing works, students create and perform new work, with the opportunity to take electives beyond their primary art form.

What is the cost of the full Summer@Cornish program? Each Intensive is $3160 + 2 electives, $730 or $820 per elective. = $4620 or $4710.

Is there a discount for early registration? Yes! We have an Early Bird 10% discount if you register before March 1st.

Do we offer scholarships? Yes! You can apply for need-based scholarship here. Scholarship deadlines are below.

Residential Program scholarship deadline: February 14th.

Local student scholarship deadline: March 1st.

Can I just take one elective vs. the entire program? Yes! You can choose to take just the morning Intensive, one afternoon elective or both afternoon electives. Build your own program!

Do I have to audition or submit a portfolio? Students do not need to submit a portfolio for visual arts. Students do not need to audition for any performance-based program, unless you are applying to the Dance Intensive. Students in the Music Intensive must be comfortable playing either of the pieces of music listed here, or they can send in a recording or video of them playing a piece of music of their choice.

Is there housing for students who are too far to commute? Yes, Summer@Cornish has a residential program for students. You can read more about that here.

Do I need to stay in the housing to participate? No, students may choose to stay in our Summer@Cornish housing, or they may commute to campus.

Will there be homework, tests or quizzes? Nope! Students may choose to work on their artwork or practice at home as they wish, but there will not be homework in the traditional sense.

Can students use practice rooms? Yes! Any student who would like to use a practice room or space can request a time or space.

Do students need to bring any supplies? All supplies are included! Students in any performance intensive or elective will be expected to bring their own instruments, or specific clothing or footwear needed. Any pianos, drum kits, or amps are included and on campus for use during the program.

Will I receive college credit for participating in Summer@Cornish? Summer@Cornish is not a credit bearing program. Once students have completed any intensive or elective with Summer@Cornish, they may request a “letter of completion” to submit with their college application or any other program or job they would like.

What are the typical number of students per Intensive? Depending on what morning Intensive you register for, class size can range from 10 to 30 students.

What are the typical number of students per Elective? Most electives range from 10-15 students.

Do I need to bring a lunch? Students in the Residential Program will have all meals included and may choose anything they like from our restaurant, Nellie’s Cafe. Students that choose to commute to campus may purchase lunch through the Nellie’s Café. All students, residential and commuter students are also free to visit many of Seattle’s great lunch spots nearby. Learn more about Seattle & South Lake Union restaurants here

Is there parking? Cornish College has very limited parking available in the summer. Students that do need to park may utilize the street parking, or short block walk through the Whole Foods stairway across the street to the Amazon garage below.

Is there public transportation? Yes! All students under the age of 18 receive free transportation on Seattle public transportation. The Link Light rail is a close 8 minute walk for students who may want to utilize that for park-n-ride, but we are also located near several bus routes.

What activities and attractions are nearby? Students have easy access to some of the city’s best attractions including the Space Needle, SIFF, MoHAI, and MoPop. Parks nearby include the South Lake Union waterfront and Seattle Center. Students can explore the rich arts scene with visits to local galleries and the Seattle Art Museum.
