Students must provide their own film, darkroom printing paper, substrates for Cyanotype and
plates and Collodion if wanting to do Wet Plate. Shared silver bath.

In this hands-on 6-week course, students will explore non-digital photographic methods, giving them the opportunity to experiment with historical techniques such as Cyanotype, Wet Plate Collodion, and traditional silver halide processes. Participants will delve into the distinctive aesthetic qualities and creative possibilities each method offers while developing technical skills and engaging in artistic exploration to create unique, textured, and handcrafted photographic prints. This course begins with film and darkroom techniques using large-format cameras, transitioning into Cyanotype and Van Dyke printing. With these foundational skills, students will progress to the Wet Plate Collodion process, learning to create striking and timeless images.

No prior experience with alternative processes is required, though a basic understanding of photography principles is recommended. Students will gain hands-on experience in preparing substrates, mixing chemicals, control exposure, and creating both camera-based and camera-less images. This course fosters a comprehensive understanding of photography’s artistic potential beyond the digital realm.

Included with tuition, students will have 2 lab sessions available per week and Sunday after class until 8pm or Thursday evenings from 4:30 to 8:30pm.
