In this course, designed for all levels of composers, students will either deepen their knowledge of brass composition or begin to have an understanding of brass instrumentation, techniques, and tonal possibilities. Participants will explore the unique characteristics of various brass instruments, learn compositional techniques in notation, and create original music tailored for brass ensembles. Through a blend of theoretical study, practical exercises, peer review and faculty feedback, students will develop their skills in writing and gain experience through a live rehearsal and recordings.

Each student will have a chance to work with musicians and learn how to communicate your compositions in a live rehearsal setting, as well as the notation skills to be able to communicate your music clearly. Whether you're looking to refine your composition skills on new music, or work on previous compositions to grow your repertoire, each student will come away with a live recording of their work.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Develop an understanding of the tonal and technical capabilities of brass instruments.
  • Analyze existing brass compositions to identify successful techniques and approaches.
  • Compose original compositions for brass ensembles, considering balance, harmony, and orchestration.
  • Collaborate with peers to refine and perfect compositions through feedback and workshopping new ideas.
  • Compose and complete at least one original composition that will be used for a live rehearsal and a final live recording.
