Get Ready for an Unforgettable Summer@Cornish 2024!
We couldn’t be more excited for Summer@Cornish 2024! Over the next month, exceptional teen creatives will descend upon Cornish College of the Arts' main campus in Seattle, Washington, building and expanding their artistic toolkits!
A Mini-College Experience & The Future of Creativity
From musical theater to sound design, comic studio to 3D illustration, Summer@Cornish is all about learning new ways to see, hear, move, and act to tell compelling stories through art. Cornish College is one of the only performing and visual arts campuses in the nation, creating an incredibly unique environment where teens are encouraged to KEEP EXPLORING. All too often students narrow their focus in one artistic discipline or even style, believing that is the path to college. At Cornish, because we are so multi-disciplinary and have been a center for creative innovation for over a century, we know creative teens grow artistically when they develop skills beyond their primary discipline.
The future of the arts lies not in any one discipline but in the interdisciplinary work of entertainment and media. Every video game and animated movie features voice actors, dancers in mocap suits, illustrators, composers, musicians, and directors who must be well-versed in various creative mediums. Summer@Cornish students have the chance to mix and match their electives, allowing them to experience working in a discipline different from their primary art form.
Mental Health & Creative Teens
One of the most cherished aspects of Summer@Cornish is the opportunity for teens to meet new friends for a lifetime—in person! It’s not always easy being the “artsy one” in high school, and for some students, this is the first time they feel truly welcomed and understood as creative individuals. While today’s teens might only have peers online through games or chats, we know that isn’t sufficient for many reasons, including their mental health. Meeting peers in person, working quietly side by side in a still-life drawing, or intensively with others in a dance class allows students to authentically experience the joy of creating beyond their bedroom walls.
College Prep & Culmination Day
In addition to practicing auditions or learning about how to prepare a portfolio on Friday mornings, a full art college fair on the last day allows parents and teens to meet national representatives from School of the Art Institute in Chicago (SAIC), Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA), Kansas City Art Institute, and many others! Additionally, students can have their portfolio reviewed and experience mock auditions for college recruiters in a safe and supportive environment.
Students who are not ready (yet) to engage in mock auditions or share their portfolio are still highly engaged in final performances, screenings of their work, and a full exhibition in Cornish's 9th Street Gallery. It's a truly fantastic day that leaves teens feeling supported and celebrated by their families and friends.
See you all soon on campus! - Kel
