In this 8-week course, students will learn a tune a week and use those tunes to explore ear learning strategies (including scale and chord theory taught from an ear learner's perspective) and ways to embellish a tune with shuffle bowings, double stops and variations. Students will also practice jam skills, like key identification, playing back up, and picking tunes up on the fly. Though all tunes will be taught by ear in class, recordings and sheet music will both be made available online.
Learning outcomes:
- Expanding your repertoire of old time tunes
- Gaining new strategies for learning by ear
- Essential jam skills like key identification, playing the starting "potatoes", and how to participate on tunes you don't know
- Learning scale and chord theory to help pick up tunes faster, add double stops, and play backup
