Voice for Musical Theater
About the Course
Students will be given all supplies needed for this elective.
Students will build confidence singing for musical theater through vocal technique, character exploration, and ensemble practice. Whether they’re trying musical theater for the first time or building on previous experience, they’ll develop skills for expressive singing in a supportive studio environment.
Through guided exercises and song work, students will explore how breath, tone, diction, and phrasing support a performance. They’ll practice connecting lyrics to a character’s thoughts and emotions, learning how acting choices can bring a song to life.
Students will work on both solo material and group songs, developing their individual voice while learning to listen and blend within an ensemble. Through practice and feedback, they’ll strengthen their technique, make purposeful performance choices, and become more comfortable sharing their work with others.
What Students Will Create
Students will develop and rehearse solo and ensemble selections from musical theater. Their work will demonstrate their growing ability to combine vocal technique, character, and storytelling, with opportunities to share their progress through in-class performances.

My So-Called High School Rank | Official Trailer | HBO
My So-Called High School Rank chronicles the creation of a musical theater production at Granite Bay High School in Sacramento, CA, inspired by students’ stories of the constant pressures to achieve a top-rank in every part of their lives to get ahead in today’s fierce college admissions process.
In an uncanny case of art anticipating real life, Granite Bay’s musical “Ranked” was in the works weeks before Rick Singer and the “Varsity Blues” scandal made headlines in 2019. The play’s apt timing and subject matter speak to a culture where many students feel driven to succeed at any cost.
The film features the “Ranked” creators Kyle Holmes and David Taylor Gomes, as well as students, parents and staff of Granite Bay High School and Cupertino High School in California, Fordham High School for the Arts in New York City, and Ripley High School in West Virginia.
